About the Opportunity

West Bay Mechanical Ltd. is looking for full-time Commercial Sheet Metal Journeymen and 2nd to 4th Year Apprentices based out of Nanaimo, BC, with projects across the mid-Island region, primarily around Nanaimo and North Island.

Reporting to the Sheet Metal Division Manager within the Commercial Department, you will play a key role in the installation of HVAC systems on large-scale construction projects across Vancouver Island.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for carrying out ductwork layout and installation, equipment setup, and ensuring work is completed to code and project specifications.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Installing sheet metal ductwork and HVAC-related components on commercial job sites
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and construction documents
  • Assembling, positioning, and securing ducts, vents, and fittings according to specifications
  • Collaborating with project managers, supervisors, and fellow crew members to meet project goals
  • Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment in line with COR safety standards
  • Adhering to installation best practices and company protocols across job sites
  • Supporting or mentoring apprentices, depending on experience and position
  • Traveling to various job sites across central and northern Vancouver Island

About You

To qualify, you will need either a valid Red Seal Endorsement or trade qualification in Sheet Metal Work, or be a 2nd to 4th year apprentice actively working toward certification. Previous experience working on HVAC systems in commercial, institutional, or large-scale residential construction will also be essential.

The following are required:

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Willingness and ability to travel to various job sites across the mid-Island region
  • Physical fitness to perform hands-on work in a construction environment

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Knowledge of sheet metal ductwork fabrication and installation
  • Familiarity with blueprint reading and interpreting technical drawings
  • Understanding of HVAC system components and function
  • Commitment to safety practices and clean jobsite standards
  • Strong communication and collaboration with crew members
  • Ability to work independently or take direction as needed
  • Leadership or mentoring experience (for Journeymen)
  • Reliability and consistent attendance on job sites

About the Benefits

Compensation is competitive and based on skills, experience, and certification level:

Journeyman (Commercial Sheet Metal Technician): $46–$55 per hour, with flexibility for highly experienced candidates and opportunities to step into Lead Hand or Foreman roles

2nd to 4th Year Apprentice: $27–$39.80 per hour, with wage increases based on performance and progression through the program
